In 1988 I started gardening and I quickly found out at that time that I needed a pair of quality gardening gloves to protect my hands. I preferred goatskin gloves to all the other types and my preference has remained that way throughout time.
Smith and Hawken used to produce a fantastic goat skin glove which I purchased repeatedly as a Christmas present to myself every year until their company went out of business. Their Target brand does not offer the same item. I had stumbled across the Fir Tree brand of goatskin glove a couple of years ago while searching eBay for a new pair.
The pair that I had purchased a couple of years ago now has a hole in the index finger - which is to be expected with my use of them. I am now replacing that pair with a new one.
These gloves are a very good quality and they have a fantastic fit. I have a ladies size large also size 8 hand and the Fir tree size medium fits me great.
I expect to get a couple of years of use from these before I need to replace them again. The goatskin is a slightly heavier weight than gloves generally marketed for women so they tend to last longer than one season of gardening. They are also considerably less expensive. My one tip is to use these in a dry garden. If you can’t resist pulling the weeds when it is raining the gloves will get wet and they will need to be worked back to their regular softness again.
I highly recommend these.
Edited to update: I needed to wash one of these gloves because it got some poison ivy oils on it and I kept getting recontaminated with a rash at the cuff. Here is a picture of how the glove looked after being washed with Eucalan wool wash.
I saw these on list of some of the best products for outdoors. They are perfect! The gloves are thick enough to protect hands from scratches and pokes, but you still have enough dexterity to handle tools and small items. They are comfortable and fit well. The sizing took me a minute to figure out when I was ordering. I bought a size 8 which is a medium.
